ULTRAFILTRATION

X-Flow’s hollow fiber ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, with a MWCO (Molecular Weight Cutt-off) of 150 to 200 kilodaltons (kDa), remove all silt, turbidity, bacteria and viruses, as well as micro organisms such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia.

Water treatment

Ultrafiltration membrane productivity is high, while pressure drop and energy consumption is low. X-Flow’s UF membrane technology is used to produce potable water and process water, and is used in the pre-treatment process of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plants.

X-Flow ultrafiltration membrane technology has proven to be an excellent large-scale treatment method for surface water, the effluent of wastewater treatment plants, and groundwater projects with suspended solids levels of to 200 mg/L.

HOW IT WORKS

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a membrane filtration process similar to Reverse Osmosis, using hydrostatic pressure to force water through a semi-permeable membrane element. In this method we use Pentair X-Flow hollow fibers.

UF is a barrier to suspended solids, bacteria, viruses, endotoxins, and other pathogens to produce water with very high purity and low SDI.

A pressure difference is the driving force for the membrane. The pressure difference allows the water to flow through the pores of the membrane. All matter larger than the pores is retained on the surface of the membrane. This process is called pore size exclusion. The membrane is called semi-permeability because it allows water to pass while it retains other substances. The pore size of the membrane determines the size of the particles that are being removed. If the pores are micrometer sized the membrane is called a microfiltration membrane, if the pores are smaller than a tenth of a micrometer the membrane us called an ultrafiltration membrane.

Micro- and Ultrafiltration membrane elements are capable of removing suspended solids, bacteria and larger micro organisms, such as cryptosporidium and giardia. Additionally the ultrafiltration pore size is small enough to reliably remove smaller matter such as viruses, macro molecules and colloidal matter. Dissolved matter, such as e.g. beneficial minerals are not being retained by the membrane elements.

WHAT IT REMOVES

  • Micro organisms
  • Viruses
  • Silica
  • Silt
  • Turbidity
  • Bacteria

BENEFITS

  • Simple process and compact plant
  • Good and constant quality of the treated water concerning microbial and particle removal
  • Friendly for the environment
  • Very low consumption of chemicals

Pentair X-Flow Hollow Fiber Ultrafiltration

In this video, we explain the fundamentals of Pentair XFlow ultrafiltration membranes.

DRINKING WATER FROM SURFACE WATER

Meeting the global drinking water quality standards requires a wide local variety of treatment methods, due to different feedwater sources. Pentair delivers solutions for every drinking water application.

Ultrafiltration is the perfect method for producing drinking water from surface water.

Ground water from a variety of sources, such as ground water, surface water, lake or river water or seawater can be sources for potable water treatment.

In some cases, bore holes for collection of ground water that were constructed many decades ago are constructed of bricks. When exposed to ground movement, cracks can develop which allows surface water to enter the bore holes.

The traditionally clean ground water can then become contaminated with microorganisms. This is referred to as “ground water under the influence of surface water”.

The X-Flow Xiga or Aquaflex membrane solutions can be used to filter the ground water to remove contaminants and guarantee complete removal of bacteria and viruses. Surface water contains microbiology as well as suspended solids. Sometimes dissolved organics are present that cause color in the surface water. X-Flow Xiga or Aquaflex membranes solutions can provide a reliable treatment system that eliminates the need for multiple treatment steps.
